Shomari Smith or Redymix grew up in Tunapuna and eventually moved to Trincity. He had a relatively happy childhood enjoying the fun of playing cricket on the roads, he also liked playing basketball and he even appreciated the ‘licks’ he got as a child. Growing up, Shomari listened to a lot of music from artist like Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, The Fugees, Buju Banton, Shabba Ranks, Lord Kitchener, Sparrow, he also listened to a lot of 80’s rock.
When Redymix was younger he would look at a lot of turntablism videos, even today he still looks at them it is these videos that served in part as his influence. But he admits that his major scale as ironic as it may sound came from the frequency he is apart of currently. He credits his style from analyzing and fusing what he’s seen and heard others, especially individuals who have been a part of the 96.1 WEFM family. His ability to merge his influences and incorporate them with his creativity has resulted in his unique style.
It has been almost eleven years since Shomari Redymix Smith first started his career. He has been actively involved in the University Entertainment for a number of years now, and is more than likely found at most of the UWI events happening year round. He also in recent time has started making appearances on the stage of the World Famous Zen Nightclub. He also worked at Tsunami and Anchorage, Base, Sting Nightclub, Great Fete weekend in Tobago and a great deal more places.
Redymix remembers clearly, the first day of ‘DJ warz’ as the first time he played on air. It was Saturday 28th March 2009 during Akil’s mid evening set from 4-7pm. He remembers he was scheduled to go on at 5pm and one of his friends messaged him to let him know just how many people was locked on to the station and wanted to hear what he was capable of. He describes it as a great feeling to have that kind of support system backing him. Even though he has come a long way from that young man making his debut, he attests that nothing and no one can ever take those first thirty minutes being on air away from him.
Shomari has hopes of delving into event management as well as music production in the future. He has a passion for getting involved in anything that helps to develop the youth of the nation whether it be in music or otherwise. His eventual hopes are that the youths of the nation develop into the intelligent, issue driven society of tomorrow.
His co-worker Rodney King always taunts him about the fact that he considers himself powered by Red Bull. Doubles belong to his major food groups, and he also loves to try different restaurants and discover what culinary adventures may await.
Apart from his time at 96.1 WEFM studios he can be found playing at events, and occasionally likes to kick back and watch a movie, or tan out on the beach.
His motivation exists in his desire to make every shift, performance and interaction better than the one before and believing that success comes to the hard working and those who want it the most.
Even though he in past he has experienced getting a little nervous before an event, by the time he gets on stage he goes into his zone and the everything becomes less about him and more about his crowd.
Redymix says “support those who are attempting to do something positive because you never know when you will need the support in return.” He lives by his motto HLR! Hustle Loyalty and Respect.
