Sheyna West

Sheyna Weston, is affectionately known as Sheyna West was born August 23rd, 1985. When I first met Akil from Associate Degree, I introduced myself and he started calling me Sheyna West because he thought my name was too long. Interestingly enough, he didn’t know that my mother’s maiden name is West and yes, she married a man whose last name is Weston. I’m both a Leo and a Virgo; this generally explains my moody personality. I grew up in Freeport and attended St. Xavier’s Private School in St. Joseph, where I began my interest in music and entertainment by taking part in the school’s annual calypso competition, theatrical productions and vibrant Steelpan group. 

I have always appreciated announcers who were able to keep me entertained. In my secondary school days at Bishop Anstey High School, my radio was forever stuck on 96.1 and my ears in tuned to the likes of Tweez, Hoppy (when he was at 96), Shal and CV Smooth. After winning the Star Wars competition hosted by 96.1 in 2009 I began my career as a radio broadcaster/announcer on the nation’s top radio station working with these guys I grew up listening to. Who could ask for more?

My favorite memory of doing The Hook Up on Sunday mornings would have to be when I first heard my name in one of the drops for the show. It was so weird hearing my name over the speakers like that. I think that made the fact that I won the competition and was now working at 96.1 more realistic for me. Other than that, every week on the show brings new excitement with my co-host.

Outside of studio life, I usually spend my time preparing for my next show. I use a lot of things I experience or see on a daily basis, in addition to online research, as material for the show on a Sunday morning. I am a ‘night owl’ as my mother calls me, which means that I’m always outside. I sometimes epitomize the saying. ‘When you’re out; stay out’.

Sheyna the person has a bubbly personality and is very friendly and down to earth. I enjoy a good night out with my close friends but sometimes prefer a quiet evening at the movies or at a popular seated liming spot.  I loooooove cheesecake, my favorite has recently changed to passionfruit cheesecake. That’s the way to my heart!  When I’m socializing there’s only one thing I drink all night long, Malibu and pineapple juice. If you want to talk to me in a party and don’t know how, buy me one of those and you’re good to go! Lol. There are few things that can get under my skin, drivers with high beam lights at night, people who call your cell phone in succession (if I don’t answer I’ll call you back) and people who have no regard for time, I hate being late.

Life motivates me. The blessings that I have received thus far and those that I’m sure I am still to be given. That’s why I always keep a smile on my face or can always be heard scandalously laughing at even the stalest jokes. My parents, my mother especially, are also motivators as the thought of disappointing them is disheartening.

Before the start of each show I say a prayer. I used to be nervous the first couple months but as I got more comfortable I became more relaxed and my personality came to the front. I always try to know a little bit about what’s going on around me, I hate saying ‘I don’t know’. I live by three words. Serenity, Courage and Wisdom. I believe that nothing good comes without hard work. I enjoy the simple things in life and I appreciate true friendships. Life is to be lived. My indulgences are shoes and perfumes. I try to change the notion that ‘the only thing red and good is a dollar’….heavy task indeed.
